Owasco Lake as a “sapphire gem of purest ray serene seemingly born to shimmer unseen, away from casual tourist gaze.” (Slim Fingers Beckon, 1945) But Owasco’s beauty is now well known and certainly worthy of every tourist’s gaze, especially those visiting Cayuga County.
Owasco Lake lies entirely in Cayuga County. Its name is thought to come either from the Indian word Osco, which means “the crossing place” or from the word Wasco, which means “outlet” or “floating bridge.”
The lake is 10.7 mi./17.2 km. long and runs between the City of Auburn in the north and the Village of Moravia in the south. With a distance of about 25 mi./40.2 km. around the lake and easy to moderate terrain, Owasco is considered an ideal place to go cycling.
The maximum depth of the lake is 177 ft./60 m. The water is relatively clean and provides drinking water for the City of Auburn and several other municipalities.
Owasco Lake is mesotrophic, a clear-water lake with medium levels of submerged nutrients–in this case phytoplanton, a food source for small fish (and zebra mussels). This type of lake is usually healthy with a variety of aquatic life, and Owasco Lake is no exception.
Janaury 8 – Sarah Saturday – Lake Sarah, Slayton MN (Eric)
When: Saturday Jan 8. 7:00 am until we’re done.
Where: Lake Sarah, West side county park.
What: “Sarah Saturday” an HSO/Ice Leaders ice fishing get together.
Why: Our sanity is often questioned, so why not??
My mom once asked me why I do the things I do. I told her it looks like growing up sucks so we might as well have fun on the way!!!!
We’ll all meet at the county park on the west side. Meet and greet, grips and grins, make fun of a few guys, tell some lies, talk a little smack, figure out what we’re doing, and hit the lake! This is Sarah Saturday, there are no rules, if you can’t make it right away in the morning, feel free to come and go as your day allows. We’ll catch some perch, catch some walleyes, catch some crappies, and take pictures of me falling down.
Depending on ice conditions, which should be wonderful by early January, I’ll have base camp set up at my perm house with the wife cooking her world famous venison chili. We’ll take a lunch break when we feel like it, totally chow some awesome chili, and get back at it until we can’t stand it anymore.
All are welcome and this is a family event so bring the wife, bring the kids, bring grandpa, bring uncle George. No entry fees, this isn’t a tournament. Although, a few side bets may come into play.
I’ll have a grill out there and I have a cook stove in the perm house. Feel free to bring a little something and take part in the great Minnesota tradition that is pot-luck.
The lakes are freezing, ice is nice. Get out of the house and let’s go “Have more fun!”

Janaury 15 – Ice Crushers – Lake Tetonka, Waterville MN (Bunt2K)
When: January 15th 2011 – 8am till ????
Where: Lake Tetonka, Waterville (Beach access)
What: “Tetonka Ice Crushers” An Official HSO – IceLeaders Get Together
We will meet at the Beach in the town of Waterville at 8am and head out on to the ice as a group and mark our rendezvous point to set up ‘camp’. Discuss the lake, spots and species we may be targeting. Then head out and go “crush” the fish!
Meet back at camp around noon or so, fire up the grill, eat some food, and have some refreshments.
After that, many of us will head back out to our spots and continue to fish.
All are welcome as this is a family event. It’s a great time to meet new people, learn new techniques and enjoy some great food!
I will provide the grill, plates, forks napkins and condiments. Volunteers to bring some side dishes to pass, meats to grill are very welcome!

Jan 22nd – IceLeaders Iowa Great Lakes Bonanza – Spirit Lake – Spirit Lake, IA

You are all invited to come and have some fun with the FM/HSO/IceLeaders crew at the second annual ‘IIGL” Gathering January 9th at 8am. Location on the lake is yet to be determined depending on weather. Lots of great fishing possibilities since Spirit Lake is the largest lake in Iowa. Lot of species ranging from walleye, northern, crappie, and bluegill.

Get your eyes ready to peer into the crystal blue waters and get set for panfish heaven!!! You might even encounter the sighting of a 50 inch Musky while you sight fish for slab crappies, big bull gills, and we can even find a shelf in deeper water and sight fish some fantastic walleye!!! All you need to do is show up!
We will meet and try to keep traffic on the lake to a minimum as the crystal blue lake can yield some spooky pannies. In a group or spreading to cover some ground, the weed beds to the sandy flats can produce a real BONANZA of fish. We will fish the morning, take a break and join to gather some information on presentations that work on ‘Spirit Lake and grab a bite to eat together.

Spirit Lake is the largest in the chain of lakes at 5,684 acres. It is one of Iowa’s most popular lakes.

Burntside Lake is in Northern MN. set on the outskirts of Ely. Van Vac access.
It all started 8 years ago as an informal FM get together on Burtnside Lake. The theme, fish for Lake Trout, but more importantly a meet and greet social event.
An event you can put those names to faces. A place of good will and friendships made, and revisited and of coarse the Lake Trout. A group effort to make, what is the Bash.
Since the 1st Burntside Bash it has grown in popularity, has had some fluff added, contests, benefit, and prizes but the theme has always stayed the same comradery on the ice and Lake Trout.
This years Bash will much like the 1st Burntside Bash, spartan only of the fluff but much of the comradery. Let me say as with all HSO/FM get together you all have an invite to join in. After all thats what the Bash is about.
When you organize an on ice event In Northern MN in January your at the mercy of Mother Nature. We’ve encountered -20 temps, slush, and deep snow in previous Bashs but the show went on. A Big Thanks goes out to those that lended a hand and helped make that possible.
This thread will grow between now and the Bash.
Some things that I anticipate I’ll thow out there now.
I’ll use the word volunteer a lot, we need members to lend a hand, get involved this is your Bash too.
Ice Travel.
We won’t know till a week before the Bash what mode of travel we’ll need on the ice. I will note that if at all possible you should bring your own snowmobile or can borrow one please do if the conditions call for that. Folks needing rides out on the ice. We’ll need volunteers to do that. If you need a ride have your gear secure for the ride out. Use this thread to get hooked up with a volunteer driver.
If your new to lake trout fishing and Burtnside try and get into a group with an experienced leader. Which brings up the subject, we could use some volunteers for group leaders.
This will be a BYO deal for food. As this threads moves along we might see folks volunteering to bring a grills.
As usual we’ll meet in the morning at HQ and filter off onto the lake. Then meet up again in the afternoon and socialize, perhaps grill, tell lies and compare stories. We’ll set a time as we get closer to the Bash along with up to date details.

As for eats there are a lot of good, but not cheap supper clubs on the lake, we can also have the owners of Maple Ridge Motel set up there Weenie Wagon and fry up some grub. Drive time from the Cities is about 4.5hrs. Don’t worry about Drop Downs unless you want to sleep in them, I promise you will not be able to drive on the lake.
I just hope we have a year like last year, expect to leave a fish or 2 to be mounted, Gus and Nettie do a great job. Make sure you are set up with light tackle, a spring bobber is a must. I usually use 2-4lb test. the lake is stained so cameras are pretty much useless unless the sun is high and we don’t have alot of snow.

We will be meeting up around noon, at the access in Bayport for lunch on the ice. It will be good to meet everyone and get a chance to put some faces with the names. About 1:00 or 2:00 or whenever we finish lunch we will head out on the river for some outstanding crappie fishing.

I’d like to invite anyone and everyone to one of the most popular events of the season, “Cool Cats”!
Bring the whole family and join us for a great day on the ice.
We will start the day out at sun-up and catch some catfish. We will have holes drilled and folks on hand to share tips and techniques.
At noon we will have a fish fry and pot luck lunch. Catfish will be on the menu! Bring your favorite dishes to share.
Directions:
From I 94 near St Cloud take hwy 23 west to Richmond. Then go south on hwy 22. Use the winter access noted on the map if you will be driving on.(2nd access south of 23) Snowmobiles and ATV can use the DNR access.(first access heading south from 23)
